We had been referring to our fetus as Rashard for almost two months when we found out she was a girl!

We had already had a standard sonogram on Halloween to confirm the pregnancy but on November 25, 2009 I had to have a nuchal scan due to some genetic conditions that pre-exist in my family. SMS couldn't make it to that scan (it was the first week of the JV boys basketball season) so LT came with me. We were both a little shocked that it was an internal sonogram, not just an abdominal one. LT is such a good friend.
I liked the doctor who was doing the nuchal -- she was a divorced Jewish mother of a teenager who was eager to have me set her up with someone! She was also heading to New York that weekend for a Bat Mitzvah at the temple where SMS' parents go to shul! I felt comfortable with her and liked her chit-chat. When she asked me if I wanted to know what we were having, I said yes. She explained that what she was about to tell me was based on a predictive indicator, not an actual indicator, but that she was "never wrong." Ok, I said.
"You're having a girl," she said and almost immediately, quite to my surprise, tears began streaming down my face.
"I can't tell if you're happy or sad," she said.
"No bris," I said, "no bris!"
I felt completely off the hook, so to speak. Living as far away from our families as we do, the thought of everyone flying in, at a moment's notice, less than a week after the birth of our first child seemed a little much. A girl seemed much easier. I suppose we'll see about that.
It was on that day that LT named the fetus Lula, Lula Rashard.
